Debunking Top Septic Tank Myths

Busting Septic Myths

When it comes to septic systems, there’s no shortage of misinformation out there. Some of the most common septic myths can lead to major issues—and big bills—if you don’t know the facts. At Priority Pumping, we’re here to break down the truth and help you take care of your system the right way. Let’s dive into the top myths we hear all the time.

Pumping Every 2–3 Years Is Non-Negotiable

One of the most common septic myths is that you only need to pump your tank when something goes wrong. In reality, waiting for a backup means you’ve already waited too long.

Septic tanks are designed to separate solids, oils, and liquids. Over time, those solids build up. If not removed regularly, they’ll spill over into your drainfield and clog the entire system. That’s when the real problems start—slow drains, backups, and major damage that’s expensive to repair.

Routine pumping every 2–3 years keeps your septic system healthy. It’s preventative maintenance, not an optional service. Think of it like changing your car’s oil—it’s a small step that protects your whole investment.

“Flushable” Wipes Are Never Septic-Safe

Another one of those dangerous septic myths is the idea that “flushable” wipes are safe because they’re labeled that way. But here’s the truth: just because it flushes doesn’t mean it belongs in your septic system.

These wipes don’t break down the way toilet paper does. They stay intact, tangle up with other materials, and clog up your pipes, tank, and even your drainfield. It doesn’t matter if you’re on septic or city sewer—these things are bad news.

If you must use wipes, toss them in the trash. Stick to the 3 P’s: pee, poo, and (toilet) paper. That’s it. Everything else is asking for trouble.

No, Additives Can’t Replace Pumping

Some folks believe that dumping a bacteria booster or enzyme additive into their tank means they can skip pumping. But this is one of the more misleading septic myths out there.

While additives claim to help maintain bacterial balance, they often do the opposite. These products can disrupt the natural bacteria your tank needs to function properly. That throws off the system and may even lead to clogs or other issues.

And let’s be clear—no additive removes solids. Pumping physically takes the buildup out of your tank. No bottle of chemicals can replace that. Don’t fall for quick fixes. Pumping is still the most effective way to protect your septic investment.
